President’s Wall Schemes are Costing the Country

President Trump’s fixation on $5.6 billion wall is overtaking our national needs

Washington, D.C. – President Trump addressed the nation with anti-immigrant claims as the nation heads into the third week of a government shutdown.

Ben Monterroso, executive director of Mi Familia Vota released the following statement:

“President Trump used his first Oval Office address of the year to continue denigrating Latinos and immigrants and to continue to demand for an unwanted vanity wall along the U.S. – Mexico border. The self-interested extremism displayed tonight is unprecedented and our nation will suffer the consequences as Trump flails through tactics to get his border wall built. There is no excuse for Trump continuing to hurt Americans who need the government re-opened.

“Tonight, President Trump delivered more of the same lies and less solutions. This speech has been a diversion from failed policies and the turmoil in his own administration. So far, the President’s strategies have resulted in a painful government shutdown, the tearing apart of families, and the deaths of immigrants, including immigrant children.

“Our country deserves a President who is focused on our well-being and one who will respond to the humanitarian crises at the border with humane immigration policies. Trump and fellow Republicans were repudiated in the midterm elections because these policies are hurting our country. It’s time for our communities to get activated and defend themselves against these attacks through civic participation, and demand that Congress create solutions that uphold our national interests and values. We don’t need a wall – it’s time to end this charade and get the government re-opened.
