DOJ Unleashes Attacks on Multiple Laws That Protect Immigrants

The Trump administration’s Department of Justice propels its campaign against immigrants.

Washington, D.C.—The DOJ seeks to have three California laws that protect immigrants ruled unconstitutional: the Immigrant Worker Protection Act (HB 450), the Inspection and Review of Facilities Housing Federal Detainees law (AB 103); and, most notably, the California Values Act (SB 54), commonly known as the “Sanctuary State” law. The DOJ seeks to subordinate California’s immigrant shielding laws to Trump’s current inclinations, citing the Supremacy Clause.

Mi Familia Vota Executive Director, Ben Monterroso, issued the following statement:

“There are no borders when it comes to Donald Trump’s extremist, anti-immigrant actions; he believes that what he can do is limitless. It is no surprise that he’s using Jeff Session, a man with a history of documented racism, to enact his fearmongering campaign. Trump’s hate-filled imagination is causing chaos and, unfortunately, this is not baseless commotion because what he is doing creates a hostile climate, emboldens people to take unjust actions, and drains resources that could be put to effective use.

Our country is a nation of immigrants with a historic diversity and that should be embraced as it is what makes us strong. Trump’s radical, anti-immigrant campaign is callous and fundamentally un-American. We are too advanced and too great to fall back to dark memories of the slave-era past in which families were whimsically torn apart and people were systematically hunted down. We have moved far beyond those times, and we are better as a nation because we overcame that past. We cannot allow Trump to revert us to something so ugly.

We thank our leaders, especially those in California, for standing strong to defend American values. Kevin de Leon, who authored the California Values Act, said he’s, ‘disgusted that Attorney General Sessions is dead-set on undoing our progress and tearing families apart instead of extending DACA.’ We have the potential to do so much good and this is where our focus should be. Trump’s pointless, hate-filled campaign to recruit and create mass deportation operations must be put to an end. We will defend our communities, and love always wins.”
