Washington D.C. President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order around elections that could disenfranchise Latino voters across the country. In response to these attacks, Mi Familia Vota released the following statement from Hector Sanchez Barba, President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota (MFV)

We know that Trump's executive order could block millions of Americans from voting if enacted, and he lacks the legal authority to make such changes. We understand that this is a blatant attempt to exclude us from the Democratic process, particularly for Latino and naturalized citizen voters. Mi Familia Vota has been fighting and winning court cases against these extreme anti-voting laws in places like Arizona for over a decade.

In fact, just recently, Mi Familia Vota won a case blocking provisions of a law that would do something similar to what Trump is proposing now. The 9th Circuit court struck down key provisions of this legislation as they were deemed to infringe upon people's civil rights. Specifically, the court ruled that Arizona cannot require Documented Proof of Citizenship to vote in Presidential elections or to be able to vote by mail and that the Birthplace and Citizenship Checkbox registration requirements imposed by Arizona are contrary to the Civil Rights Act.

We will always fight to make Democracy accessible for everyone and continue to stand on the front lines against any voter suppression attacks. We must ensure that every eligible citizen has the opportunity to exercise their fundamental right to vote."
