Today’s ruling creates uneven application of the law on basic rights, and despite leaving an opening for class action lawsuits, empowers Trump Administration to further separate families
Washington, D.C. - President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota Hector Sanchez Barba issued the following statement in response to today’s Supreme Court ruling gutting nationwide injunctions in federal district courts:
“Today’s Supreme Court ruling signals a dangerous shift and advances a direct attack on our democracy and Constitution. Let’s be clear: this allows an attack on U.S.-born children and families, but also shields a blatant assault on the 14th amendment. It is a sad day when the Supreme Court sides with a tyrant to weaken birthright citizenship in the United States. This is a call to action, to unite, to organize and fight for our Democracy at the ballot box and beyond.
“Trump and his extremist allies continue to play politics with the very fabric of our Democracy to prosecute an attack on the lives and livelihoods of immigrant families. Instead of working towards meaningful and permanent solutions, they choose cruelty and chaos to score political points – causing tremendous harm to individuals, families, communities, and to the broader economy.
“While this is far from over, the ruling raises troubling questions about how uneven enforcement will be applied while we await a ruling from the Supreme Court on the broader issue of birthright citizenship itself. If today’s ruling allows some states to limit birthright citizenship, meaning that where you are born will determine whether or not you are an American citizen, then it will create chaos across the country, enable significant abuse, and change the very nature of our national identity forever.”
