WASHINGTON, DC – President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota, Héctor Sánchez Barba, issued a statement after the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday cleared Texas’ newly redrawn congressional map by formally overturning a lower court’s ruling:

“The decision by the Supreme Court of the United States to allow Texas to move forward with its extremely gerrymandered map is deeply disappointing and dangerous for our democracy. At a moment when public trust in our institutions is already fragile, this ruling sends the wrong message: that politicians can pick their voters rather than voters choosing their representatives.

“Let’s be clear here: Donald Trump is about to lose the House and quite possibly the Senate because his policies are toxic to Latinos and all hard-working people in this country. He is raising prices on groceries, gas, and the only people benefiting are the ultra-wealthy and corporations.

“Texas moved forward without the transparency or voter input that states like California and Virginia have embraced. In those states, reforms were shaped with the public, not imposed on them. Texans deserved the same opportunity to have a say in how their democracy works.

“This is not just about lines on a map; it’s about power, representation, and whether every community has a fair shot at being heard. When maps are manipulated behind closed doors, communities – especially communities of color – are silenced and sidelined.

“We will not accept a system where the rules are rigged from the start. Our democracy is strongest when it is inclusive, transparent, and accountable to the people – not to those seeking to hold onto power at any cost.

“Mi Familia Vota is organizing, protecting voter rights, and doing the work on the ground, and we are seeing a community that is furious about being racially profiled by ICE and about having to pay more at the grocery store and at the gas pump. They can try to cheat all they want with these partisan redistricting schemes, but they can not escape the fact that Latinos are fed up with their awful policies that continue to hurt our communities and demand change.”
