WASHINGTON — Hector Sanchez Barba, president and CEO of Mi Familia Vota, issued the following statement after the Supreme Court sided with the Trump administration today in a case about Trump’s executive order that aims to restrict mail-in voting ahead of the 2026 midterm elections:

“The Trump administration is continuing its attack on our democracy and openly laying the groundwork to steal the elections by deliberately making it harder for eligible Americans to exercise their constitutional right to vote.

“Mail-in voting provides a secure and accessible way to participate in our democracy, particularly for seniors, people with disabilities, rural voters, working families, military personnel, and Americans who cannot easily get to the polls on Election Day.

"As Justice Sotomayor noted in her dissent, this ruling did not determine that attempts to interfere with the 2026 midterms are lawful nor grant any further authority. Attempts to federalize our elections and take away control from state and local election officials are still outlawed by the Constitution, and any attempt to put voter rolls into the hands of DHS can and will continue to be challenged."

“This Supreme Court decision is a setback for democracy. However, at Mi Familia Vota, we are redoubling our efforts nationwide to register voters and hold those in power accountable. At a moment when voting rights and democratic institutions face growing threats, we will continue fighting to protect and strengthen our democracy by ensuring every eligible American can make their voice heard, cast their ballot without unnecessary barriers or intimidation, and fully participate in shaping the future of our country.”
