”The attacks against our communities are not only unjust, but they also threaten the unity and collective progress we have worked so hard to build as a nation.”
Washington D.C. – As Trump delivers his State of the Union address today, MFV stands firmly against any attempts to scapegoat or marginalize our communities. In response to Trump's words Hector Sanchez Barba, President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota released the following statement:
“It is vital that we remain vigilant against any hateful language that undermines the rich diversity and strength of democracy. The attacks against our communities are not only unjust, but they also threaten the unity and collective progress we have worked so hard to build.
The truth is, our nation and economy thrive on the contributions of immigrants and Latinos. This is not an opinion. This is a proven fact. Between 2000 and 2022, immigrants accounted for three-quarters of growth in the U.S. labor force. Immigrants are also 80% more likely to start a business than U.S.-born citizens.
We know that immigrants are not only the soul of our country but a key economic driver. According to the Immigration Hub, “the Trump administration has stripped 800,000 hardworking people of their legal protections from deportation and the ability to work and contribute to this country.” What this administration is doing is going to hurt not just millions of people but our economy.
Donald Trump promised to lower prices, since he has become president the opposite has happened. Prices are climbing under Trump, in fact economists predict a “Trumpcession” and consumer confidence is plummeting. DOGE cuts to the Department of Housing and Urban Development and Tariffs will make buying a house more expensive. Trump and Musk’s reckless mass firings forced small businesses to lay off employees, losing thousands of private sector jobs.
Trump's trade war against America’s three biggest trading partners, is short sighted. It is drawing immediate retaliation and sending financial markets into a tailspin will hurt not just our country as a whole with higher prices but border states who do billions of dollars in trade with Mexico. This will cost jobs in border states and places like Michigan which manufactures cars.
The strength of our nation lies in our unity, and in these challenging times, it is more important than ever to reject division and embrace the shared values that have made our country a beacon of hope and opportunity."
