Washington D.C. – President Donald Trump has signed a number of toxic executive orders on immigration, taking extreme measures that would severely restrict legal immigration, further militarize our southern border, and threaten the foundation of our democracy. Hector Sanchez Barba, Mi Familia Vota, President and CEO releases the following statement in response to these harmful executive orders:

“Our country is at its best when we are able to harness the power of those who come here to contribute to build a better, more equitable society for all. Our country’s uniqueness lies in its ability to welcome  anyone who seeks an opportunity to work and  become a vital part of our society.

Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda is not just an attack on immigrants, it’s an attack on the very foundation of our nation and our values.  Donald Trump wants people to believe that immigrants are bad for our country and don’t contribute anything to America - he is wrong. He is seeking to inflict  violence, and terror against everyday people, families and communities across the country. His recently signed executive orders will hurt our families, our economy, and result in millions living in fear. We’ve seen this before, children being torn from their parents’ arms and locked in cages. Let's be clear here: these executive orders will extend to millions of people regardless of their immigration status.

Perhaps most troubling is Trump's attempts to revoke Birthright citizenship, this unconstitutional act will tear families apart and change our country forever if allowed to be enforced. This is a clear violation of our constitution and our democracy.  According to the Immigration Hub:

This provision will create second class citizen children in the U.S. The 14th amendment to the Constitution guarantees citizenship to all people born in the U.S. This was hard-won progress after the Civil War moved America closer to realizing its founding principles that all people are created equal.

At Mi Familia Vota, we choose humanity—we choose to stand by justice, equality, and human rights. We know that immigrant households paid:

Over $500 billion in total taxes; that includes $35 billion in taxes paid by undocumented households. In fact, immigrant households paid nearly one in every six tax dollars collected by federal, state, and local governments, helping fund a wide range of social services from public schools to food stamp programs and healthcare insurance for low-income families.

We need these contributions, and we must honor the humanity of our immigrant familia. That is why we will fight these attacks on our community with everything we have, organizing, mobilizing, and building the political power necessary to hold accountable those who are behind and support these hateful acts. We are on the frontlines because we believe in a democracy that works for everyone, not just the privileged few.”
