Washington D.C. – Today, the House passed the SAVE Act, a dangerous voter suppression measure aimed to disenfranchise millions of eligible voters. In response to this attack, Hector Sanchez Barba, President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota released the following statement.
“Our country is at its best when everyone can vote, and we get robust views of all parts of our Democracy. We know that informed voters can change the course of history and build a better and more equitable country for all.
That is why the House passage of The SAVE Act is so disappointing. This is the latest anti-voter political stunt from MAGA to intimidate, create unnecessary barriers, and suppress voter participation. This is an attempt to purge millions of eligible voters to register and cast their ballot, particularly Latinos and naturalized citizens.
We should find ways to make it easier for voters to vote, not harder. A democracy is defined by the ease with which voters can access the ballot box. Removing voters who are eligible to vote is inherently anti-democratic.
This bill requires voters to prove their citizenship through a passport or birth certificate. More than 140 million Americans don't have a passport, and nearly 69 million don't have a birth certificate that matches their married last name. It’s clear that this political stunt is not about security; it's about attacking our Democracy and the fundamental rights of voters.
Mi Familia Vota will continue to stand in the front lines to fight for our democracy and the rights of all Latinos. We REFUSE to be intimidated and excluded from casting our vote and raising our voice. We call on all responsible Senators to oppose this legislation in the Senate.”
