WASHINGTON, DC Mi Familia Vota President and CEO Hector Sánchez Barba today sounded the alarm over reports that Donald Trump’s Department of Justice is pressing states for access to data and equipment, in a way that the Washington Post reported “is sparking concern…about federal interference ahead of the 2026 midterms.”

Hector Sanchez Barba, President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota, issued the following statement:

"The U.S. Department of Justice has played an important role throughout the last six decades in the implementation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Unfortunately, what we are seeing now is an attempt by MAGA to manipulate the very systems of justice intended to protect access to the ballot for the purpose of potentially disenfranchising voters. Let’s be clear: This is not about security, this is about political control.

The Trump Administration and its allies have long claimed – without any evidence – that non-citizens have voted in large numbers, something that is already against the law. State and local officials already have systems in place to verify eligibility and citizenship, which is exactly how they are able to issue Real ID’s and driver licenses. Undermining the integrity of local and state elections would move our country further from the representational democracy the founders intended. This is voter intimidation and we will not tolerate it. Mi Familia Vota will stand up to these egregious efforts in the courts, and at the ballot boxes.”
