Mi Familia Vota Denounces Bill That Would Give Trump Extraordinary Powers Over Advocacy Organizations
Press Release

Washington D.C. - The House of Representatives has passed H.R. Bill 9495, legislation that would give Donald Trump the ability to withhold tax exempt status from any non–profit he deems a “terrorist supporting organization.”
In response to this news Hector Sanchez Barba, President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota released the following statement:
“This harmful legislation threatens the foundation of our democracy by effectively shutting down tax-exempt organizations without transparency or appropriate due process. No president should be given such extraordinary power, let alone someone with the temperament that Donald Trump possesses. This is a direct attack on any organization that could play a strong role in empowering communities to engage civically in our Democracy.
In a democracy we have due process, we strive for transparency in our legal process, this legislation would shred them. It could very well weaponize our Treasury Department and create an unjust system which punishes people that the President deems his enemies.
Mi Familia Vota remains committed and will fight the passage of this legislation, and we call on our allies in the Senate to oppose final passage. We will continue to fight for our democracy and defend the vital work of nonprofits across the nation.
Mi Familia Vota’s mission is to advance the Latino community’s policy priorities, by mobilizing Latino power, through year-round activation of the electorate, and investment in local infrastructure.
