WASHINGTON, DC – Thirty five years ago today, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a resolution on the protection of the rights of all migrant workers and members of their families. Every year since, International Migrants Day has been marked by international organizations, governments, and civil society in the United States and around the world.

Hector Sanchez Barba, President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota, issued the following statement:

“Today, on International Migrants Day, we pause to recognize the journeys, challenges, and incredible contributions of migrants across the world. Migration is a fundamental part of human history and a basic human right.

“Let us remember that migrants build our economy, enrich our culture and strengthen the fabric of this country. And yet their rights, safety and dignity are too often treated as a bargaining chip. This day calls us to raise awareness and uphold our rights so we can ensure that every migrant is treated with the fairness and respect they deserve.

“At Mi Familia Vota, we transform our vision into action because we believe migrants not only deserve protection, but a real say in the future of the nation they help build. We will continue to fight for a future where every migrant feels seen, valued and protected. Queridos hermanos y hermanas migrantes, aquí en Mi Familia Vota, we honor your journey and story of resilience. Les deseamos un feliz Día Internacional de las Personas Migrantes.”
