WASHINGTON — Hector Sanchez Barba, President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota, issued the following statement on Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin’s comments to the press this week asserting that ICE agents could be at voting locations:

“Federal law protects voters from intimidation and improper federal interference at the polls. Any attempt to use immigration enforcement to frighten, discourage, or prevent eligible citizens from voting is unacceptable and must be challenged.

“We will not allow threats involving ICE to become another tool of voter suppression. Our response will not be fear; it will be action. We will organize, educate, mobilize, and make sure our communities know their rights and are prepared to exercise them.

“We demand that Members of Congress, particularly those in the committees with jurisdiction over DHS, immediately condemn the Secretary’s remarks and take action to protect voters from intimidation. Mi Familia Vota will continue fighting in our communities, in the halls of Congress, and in the courts to defend our right to vote and all of our civil and constitutional rights.

“Our message to voters is clear: Do not be intimidated. Know your rights. Make a plan and vote. We will stand together to defend our rights and our democracy.”
