WASHINGTON — Mi Familia Vota’s president and CEO, Hector Sanchez Barba, issued the following statement on the passing of legendary labor leader and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta:
“Dolores Huerta was an extraordinary leader, icon and a fearless champion for justice. Her legacy shaped my own journey and inspired generations of organizers, including everyone at Mi Familia Vota.

“For decades, I had the extraordinary privilege of canvassing, marching and organizing alongside Dolores in our communities. I witnessed firsthand her unwavering commitment to empowering people, knocking on doors, and reminding every person that their voice matters. Despite her historic accomplishments, Dolores never lost sight of where real change begins: in our neighborhoods, through grassroots organizing, and with ordinary people standing together for justice.

“From the fields of California to the halls of Congress and the White House, Dolores dedicated her life to ensuring that every voice – especially those too often silenced – was heard. As co-founder of the United Farm Workers, she transformed the labor movement, uplifted immigrant and Latino communities, and proved the extraordinary power of grassroots organizing. Her historic rallying cry, ‘Sí, se puede,’ is not just a slogan; it is a living call to action that continues to unite and inspire millions across the world.

“At a time when immigrant families face fear and uncertainty, voting rights remain under threat, and working families struggle to make ends meet, carrying Dolores Huerta’s legacy forward is more important than ever. She taught us that protecting our communities takes courage, solidarity, and a willingness to organize, even amid tremendous adversity.

“Her legacy is deeply woven into the mission of Mi Familia Vota. We honor her not only by remembering what she accomplished, but by continuing the work she dedicated her life to: protecting our communities, defending our rights, and ensuring that every person has the opportunity to live with dignity and make their voice heard with organizing in civic participation at the center.

“Dolores may no longer be with us, but her spirit lives on in every organizer and every community member who refuses to give up on a better future.

“The greatest tribute we can pay Dolores is to keep her spirit alive in our actions. She always reminded us that there is an organizer in each one of us that could create positive change.

“¡Sí, se puede! Siempre.”
