WASHINGTON — Hector Sanchez Barba, President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota, issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision allowing the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to resume use of its expanded SAVE database to verify the citizenship status of registered voters:
"Today's Supreme Court shadow docket ruling is a disservice to the right to vote of countless Americans who the Trump Administration will now try to disenfranchise. Whether through gerrymandering, an insistence on the SAVE Act, attacks on mail-in ballots, or repeated claims of widespread noncitizen voting unsupported by evidence, Donald Trump and his allies continue to pursue policies that could make it harder for eligible Americans to cast their ballots.
“The Court's shameful ruling today is at best naive, and U.S. citizens in states that submit their voter rolls to DHS for approval will now have an extra burden of having to verify that their registration remains on file and challenge any attempt to remove them.
“This is part of a concerted attack designed by the party in power to choose their voters rather than allow democracy to play out as it should. That’s why we’re encouraging voters to check their voter registration status between now and their state's registration deadline, plan to vote early, and bring a family member or friend to vote with them. We strongly encourage voters not to wait until Election Day.
“This moment also underscores why access to accurate, trustworthy information is so critical. That is why Mi Familia en Acción is developing a bilingual Civic Participation Coach to help people access trusted, fact-based information about voting, citizenship, and their rights, and to counter misinformation before it keeps someone from participating.
“Mi Familia Vota is committed to ensuring our right to vote and that the future of our democracy is protected. Our community is not alone. Together, we can build a future where this and future generations are free to elect leaders of their choice. Now more than ever, our voices must be heard at the ballot box and in big numbers."
