WASHINGTON, DC – The Florida House on Wednesday passed HB 991, a sweeping voter purge bill that would require burdens to voting, including new documentation requirements, proof of citizenship and changes to acceptable voter identification.

Soraya Marquez, Florida State Director at Mi Familia Vota, issued the following statement:

“HB 991/SB 1334 are not election-integrity bills — they are voter-suppression bills. They do nothing to protect the integrity of our elections. Instead, the bill passed in the Florida House on Wednesday puts even more restrictions on American citizens in Florida – predominantly students, women and Latinos – and stops them from participating in democracy and exercising a sacred right afforded to them by the Constitution.

“Florida lawmakers who supported this bill are continuing to spread the lie of widespread voter fraud in an effort to purge eligible American voters from the rolls and to keep power at the expense of silencing their own constituents. We oppose this legislation unequivocally and ask all Floridians to call their state senators and demand that they stop the Senate version of this bill, SB 1334, before it has a chance to become law. Should this legislation become law, know that we will fight it in the courts, in the community and at the ballot box."
