WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mi Familia Vota President and CEO Hector Sanchez Barba issued the following statement on today’s Supreme Court rulings in Mullin v. Doe and Mullin v. Al Otro Lado:

“Mi Familia Vota is disappointed in today’s Supreme Court rulings allowing the Trump Administration to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians and Syrians, and allowing the Trump Administration to physically block individuals seeking asylum from making protection claims at border ports of entry.

“Asylum law and TPS were legislated precisely to offer protection for those fleeing persecution or unable to return to their countries of origin because of extraordinary circumstances. Blocking asylum seekers from stepping on U.S. soil is a way to go around the laws that Congress created to comply with international treaties and ensure the protection of persecuted persons. It also incentivizes the use of more dangerous and deadly routes to the United States.

“In the TPS case in particular, the Court said it cannot even review cases, which will empower Trump’s ICE deportation machine to take away legal protections and work permits from hundreds of thousands of people. This has been a defining element of the Trump-Miller campaign of cruelty, revoking legal or temporary status, taking away work permits, and forcing immigration judges to dismiss cases to accelerate detentions and deportations.

“The Supreme Court continues to enable the Trump administration’s extreme anti-immigration policies. These rulings undermine the very values our nation was founded on, and just a week ahead of the 4th of July and our 250th anniversary.

“Mi Familia Vota will continue to work tirelessly to empower Latino voters with the information they need to make our community’s voices heard and to insist on a government that lives up to America’s most dearly held values.”
