WASHINGTON, D.C. – President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota, Hector Sanchez Barba, issued the following statement after the U.S. Senate voted Friday on a reconciliation package that allows them to bypass the filibuster to fund a $69.5 billion three-year budget for immigration enforcement operations. The reconciliation package now heads to the U.S. House of Representatives, where the Republican majority is expected to pass it.

“For a year and a half, ICE and CBP have abused their authority, ignored Constitutional norms and violated civil liberties — even shooting three U.S. citizens. The Senate just gave them tens of billions more without oversight.

“This Senate reconciliation package is another serious attack on the basic institutions of government and represents a dangerous expansion of executive power. It bypasses the filibuster, which means it entirely ignores public pressure on the majority in Congress to rein in ICE abuses. It hands the Trump administration tens of billions of dollars for immigration enforcement over three years, allowing it to sidestep the normal budget process for the rest of Trump’s second term.

“Mi Familia Vota will mobilize voters to hold supporters of this package accountable in November. We will not tolerate ICE abuses or interference in our elections. Our fight for accountability and voting rights continues.”
