Trump Moves National Guard to Border in Attempt to Further Extremist Agenda

WASHINGTON, DC – President Trump announced an executive order that would deploy National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border.

Ben Monterroso, Executive Director of Mi Familia Vota, issued the following statement:

“This is a dangerous and misguided action that only serves to fuel this administration’s racist base. It is a total escalation of extremist, anti-immigrant policies that is not welcomed by border communities and not good for our country.

The National Guard should not be paraded at the border for show when crossings are at a historic low. Trump’s ludicrous claims of uncontrolled borders and unauthorized migration are not based on data. The people who will suffer most from his capricious decision are asylum-seekers fleeing violence from their homes. Their plight is a humanitarian challenge, not a security threat.

The southern border is not a war zone and military-style enforcement should not be used to patrol these areas, especially at the expense of the quality of life of millions of residents who live on the border who don’t want to have militarized communities. Not only is this an affront to residents, but also to our principles as a country. The Border Patrol already operates as an occupying force with very minimal transparency and often no accountability.

This also calls into question the waste of resources that will be used to fund the execution of Trump’s executive order.  This money could be better invested in border communities.

Trump’s pointless demand for a border wall must be stopped. We will continue to stand up for our communities and make sure that their rights are protected.”
