STATEMENT: Congress is Failing, Must Pass DREAM Act
President Trump’s cancellation of DACA creates an emergency situation that Congress must immediately resolve.
WASHINGTON, D.C. —Congress is moving furiously to pass a budget deal that excludes the DREAM Act, which would deny emergency relief to 700,000 DACA program recipients whose lives were placed in limbo after President Trump ordered the program to be cancelled on March 5th.
The following statement was issued by Ben Monterroso, Mi Familia Vota Executive Director:
“We know that this administration is hostile and actively working against our communities. They specifically targeted our youths because they embody the American Dream and now they want to foil the people who best represent our community’s love for this country. We are fighting to protect Dreamers from further aggressions and we are fighting for their full protection through the passing of a DREAM Act. It is outrageous that even with a clear deadline imposed by the President and national calls to action, Congress has yet to act on their behalf. Congress must take action and pass legislation that secures Dreamers.
“Our main concern right now is for the Dreamers. In an attempt to pass a deal, Senate Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer have an agreement to openly debate legislation directed at Dreamers on the floor next week. Their agreement relies on House Speaker Paul Ryan’s support. However, Ryan, who is marching in lock step with Trump, seems to only be interested in anti-immigrant legislation. With the cancellation of DACA, Trump has already caused thousands of DACA recipients to lose their status so there is no time to waste. We will push for the Senate to vote for a clean DREAM Act.
“We have come a long way and we won’t retreat on this issue. We are rallying for Dreamers’ futures. We are transforming the pain and anguish that has been caused by this administration into action. We will ensure that elected officials who vote against us are held accountable: November 6, 2018 is a key date for our movement and our community.”
