Washington D.C. – President-elect Joe Biden has selected Xavier Becerra, the attorney general of California, as his nominee for secretary of health and human services, tapping a former congressman who would be the first Latino to run the department as it battles the coronavirus pandemic. Mi Familia Vota (MFV) recently launched a national accountability campaign, #Prioridades with the goal of ensuring that during his first hundred days President-elect Biden keeps the promises he made to Mi Familia Vota and the Latino community during our #Prioridades2020 town hall earlier this year.
In response to this unprecedented appointment Hector Sanchez Barba, Executive Director and CEO released the following statement:
“President-Elect Biden looked me in the eyes and promised that his cabinet and government would reflect the diversity and power of our country. With the selection of California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, we are pleased to see that the President-Elect is taking steps in the right direction, but we are asking for 5 Latino cabinet officials. As head of the Department of Health and Human Services, Becerra would oversee both the COVID-19 response and the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which has been responsible for the care of unaccompanied migrant children. As California’s attorney general, he has led efforts to protect the Affordable Care Act, has supported “Medicare for All” and is a champion of immigrants’ rights, including the DACA program. We look forward to working with Becerra in his new role.”
