MFV Reaction to Scott Pruitt Confirmation Hearing
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The following is a statement from Ben Monterroso, executive director of Mi Familia Vota, on the confirmation hearing of Scott Pruitt as Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator:
“Our well-being and ability to thrive depends on living in healthy environments. Our children should be able to play outside without being exposed to smog that might permanently affect their health.
“If Scott Pruitt becomes Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, it will be detrimental to the well-being and health of Latino families and miserable for our Madre Tierra (Mother Earth).
“Pruitt has made his career by suing and opposing standards and rules that help provide clean air and clear water to our communities. As Attorney General of Oklahoma, Pruitt even lifted protections against the air pollution that causes asthma and the toxic mercury that causes brain damage and delayed brain development in our children. His disregard for the people affected by his policies he supports was made apparent in today’s hearing: He was not aware that Oklahoma has one of the highest rates of asthma in the United States.
“Latino families can’t afford four years without action on climate change, air pollution, and other environmental issues. More than 24 million Latinos live in the 15 cities with the greatest smog pollution, including Los Angeles, Houston, and New York. Climate change exacerbates environmental problems, including smog pollution, but Pruitt openly questions whether global warming is even happening.
“We urge Senators that care about the Latino vote to do the right thing and oppose Pruitt’s nomination. Our community will hold those Senators who support him accountable at the ballot box.”
