MFV Celebrates Harris County, Texas Program to make voting more accessible

Voters will now be able to vote anywhere in Harris County on Election Day

Harris County, Texas is now the largest in the country to implement a countywide Polling Place Program allowing voters to cast ballots anywhere in the County on Election Day.

Mi Familia Vota  issued the following statement:

It’s important for voters to be able to vote where they live, work, or got to school. We’re celebrating that Harris County is making this a reality for constituents. Already, over two million voters will benefit from this program, and we look forward to registering more voters until every eligible voter is casting a ballot on election days. Moreover, we are committed to ensuring that the Latino community, which accounts for over 40% of the population, is included at every stage of the electoral process.

Carlos Duarte, Texas state director for Mi Familia Vota expanded on some of the work anchoring this accomplishment, “The leadership and dedication to voters from Harris County Clerk, Dr. Diane Trautman, is making an enormous impact on our community. Not only did Trautman devise this proposal, but she visited the Commissioners Court twice, gathered substantial community input, enacted research and modified her proposal to satisfy tough questions from community groups and the Commissioners Court so that this program could come to fruition. Mi Familia Vota, as part of the Houston in Action coalition, testified for the County Commissioners Court in support of Trautman’s proposal to the Secretary of State and now we will be part of the Advisory Committee to the County Clerk to provide community input regarding its implementation.

We commend Harris County Clerk Trautman for leading this process and making the Countywide Polling Place Program available within two months of her taking office. This is an important step to strengthening our democracy in Harris County and we will be working to ensure that the right to vote is facilitated for all Texans.

Voters will now be able to vote anywhere in Harris County on Election Day, beginning with the May 4, 2019 Joint Election. To find more information on the Countywide Polling Place Program visit www.HarrisVotes.com or by call the Harris County Clerk’s office at 7137556965.
