MFV Calls for Action to Counter Trump Methane Regulation Roll-Backs
Latino community at heightened risk from methane emissions and climate change
The Trump administration announced plans to weaken the Environmental Protection Agency’s methane rules, proposing a roll–back of Obama-era emission regulations on the major industries that create the greatest methane emissions in the U.S.
Mi Familia Vota issued the following statement:
“The Trump administration is putting our country at risk by eliminating critical oversight and regulations that restrict our nation’s hundreds of thousands of oil and gas industries from generating even more emissions into our environment. Latinos, in particular, will be at increased risk since oil and gas facilities are in many of our communities, already threatening our health and making our air quality worse. Additionally, our families live, work, and play in areas and trades that are most exposed and impacted by climate exacerbated changes.
“Our nation’s oil and gas industry releases over 13 million metric tons of methane pollution, and the problem is only likely to get worse as drilling continues to expand. Instead of creating more loopholes for corporate polluters, the Trump administration needs to regulate companies that are jeopardizing our health and wellbeing through methane emissions.
“Mi Familia Vota will continue to stand in defense of our community and demand the continued direct regulation of methane pollution to address climate change. There’s no time to waste—not for the Latino community and not for our country. We’re taking action to support 100% clean energy and we will continue to motivate our constituents to support legislation and legislators who will act to protect communities and future generations by keeping strong federal methane standards in place.”
