MFV Advises Congress to Act Boldly Against Sham Emergency
Border Appropriations Bill Created Pathway for Trump Extremism to Prevail
President Trump signed a funding bill providing money for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and $1.375 billion for physical barrier then declared a national emergency to acquire a total of eight billion dollars in wall funding.
Mi Familia Vota issued the following statement:
“President Trump is defrauding the American people with this emergency declaration over a sham border threat to obtain funding for a wall that our country does not need or want. The emergency declaration directly defies Congress, despite the significant amount of money they conceded for a border barrier.
“Democrats and Republicans have bended to Trump’s anti-immigrant and anti-minority ideology that has rocked our nation. The appropriations bill that was passed with bipartisan support is an affront to our values as it lays the foundation that Trump needs to continue with deportations, family separations, and human rights abuses. The government was shut down for 35 days because it was morally unacceptable to fund these practices and the wall. Yet, Democrats also easily and overwhelmingly passed a bill that would escalate these tactics, providing credence for Trump’s false claims. We call on Congress to compromise, but never at the expense of our community and national values.
“We have a Trump crisis composed of fabrications and distractions, not a border security emergency. It’s time for all members of Congress to re-evaluate their relationship with the President and to take a stand against continued human rights abuses, vanity walls, and actions based in extremism. Congress must also take immediate steps to defend our constitutional system and make clear that Donald Trump cannot bypass Congress at his convenience.
“This is a moment for national introspection. Congress’ reaction to this emergency declaration will define who is acting in the interests of party and politics, and who is willing to defend our nation. Trump’s extremism must be stopped.
