Marjory Stoneman Douglas Students Announce National “Road to Change” Bus Tour
Youth-Led National Bus Tour Aims to Drive Civic Engagement & Voting
Florida – Mi Familia Vota commends a nation-wide bus tour aimed at sparking civic engagement led by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas students’ March for Our Lives movement, HeadCount, NAACP, the Townhall Project, and other progressive organizations.
Students on the bus tour will target officials across the country to advance a legislative agenda for gun violence prevention and will also pursue the enthusiasm and participation of local community members and prospective voters. Mi Familia Vota will be supporting them during this tour with voter registration assistance.
Ben Monterroso, executive director of Mi Familia Vota stated:
“Mi Familia Vota will be following the bus tour and working with young leaders in designated cities to support the Marjory Stoneman Douglas students as they register eligible voters and inspire friends, neighbors, and prospective voters to use their voting power at the midterm elections.
“Our elected officials, especially our Congress, are responsible for legislation that protects and progresses our communities. This bus tour is not only to rally our communities, but it’s a message to our elected leaders that they represent us; what they do must reflect our voices and our values.
“Marjory Stoneman Douglas students have previously organized bus tours, a celebrated march in Washington, and several other events to advocate for gun violence prevention. We are so proud of the work being done by our youth to change the direction of our country. We need to learn from their leadership, build political power, and show up to vote.”
The bus tour will officially begin on June 15th at the student-led Peace March in Chicago. Students will be providing text updates while on the tour, get connected by texting “CHANGE” to 97779.
