Donald Trump’s Speech is a Desperate Attempt to Pander to Latinos Voters

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The following is a statement from Ben Monterroso, executive director of Mi Familia Vota, on Donald Trump’s speech on immigration delivered in Phoenix, AZ:

“Let’s be clear, Donald Trump has already built a wall between himself, his campaign and Latino voters. He built this wall 14 months ago when he launched his presidential bid with verbal attacks on Latinos. He has called on deportations that will separate families and has enlisted the support of politicians that disrespect our communities like Congressman Steve King, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Senator Jeff Sessions and former Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer.

“Today’s speech, and his meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, is a desperate attempt to confuse undecided voters ten weeks before the election, at a time when he’s trailing behind at the polls.

“If Mr. Trump wants to communicate with our community, he is choosing the wrong channels. The way to engage Latinos is by coming to our barrios (neighborhoods), talking with Latino media, and meeting with our community leaders. The Latino community is watching and won’t be deceived by desperate tactics. We will continue to mobilize and protect our families through the power of our vote.”
