The Big Ugly Bill Passed in the Senate Today
Will Force Millions of People to Lose Health Care and Medicaid Coverage, Slashes SNAP Benefits, Adds Massive Funding to Break Up Our Families in ICE Raids
Washington, D.C. - Today, the U.S. Senate voted to pass the “One Big Beautiful Bill” that proposes devastating cuts to vital services that millions of Americans rely on, including:
- Terminating healthcare coverage for over 10.9 million people.
- Cutting $300 billion from public education.
- Denying food assistance to 4.5 million people, including children.
Hector Sanchez Barba, President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota, issued the following statement:
"Our families vote, and we will turn out strongly in upcoming elections to hold Senators accountable who approved of this monstrous bill today. This legislation will cause real harm to families like ours and to communities across the country, and it threatens our core American values.
“The Big Ugly Bill is incredibly irresponsible. Our children and grandchildren will have to pay for its massive debt, while obscene amounts of money will go to ICE policies that punish families and the essential workers our economy needs for their hard work and tax dollars.
“The bill also cuts vital services, and will result in millions of people losing Medicaid and other health coverage, and slashes critical food and nutrition support for hard working families, all to give billionaires a tax cut. Mi Familia Vota’s mission is to build Latino power, through year-round activation of the electorate, and we are hearing from our communities about their significant concern over this bill.
“They know that any tax savings on tips will be washed away with the higher costs they'll pay for health care, and the economic damage of aggressive immigration enforcement. And they know that slashing education grants and clean energy programs hurts vulnerable communities even more. Mi Familia Vota is fighting for a future where Latino voices shape and advance policies that promote the health, safety, and prosperity of Latino communities across the country, and we will make ourselves heard on this big, ugly, abomination of a bill."
MORE ON BIG UGLY BILL: The bill also cruelly harms immigrant communities, including people with deep roots in this country, people who are lawfully present, and even U.S. citizens.
- It will pour $45 billion into immigration detention facilities, $30 billion more to ICE for hiring, training, and retaining personnel, and another $46.5 billion for construction and installation of border barriers.
This bill will massively expand taxpayer money dedicated to raids in our neighborhoods, businesses, and homes, with almost no accountability.
- It would charge a minimum $100 fee just to apply for asylum.
- It shortens work permit durations for people with TPS, parole, or asylum, creating a $550 charge for work authorization applications and requiring renewal every six months.
