WASHINGTON, D.C. – Martin Luther King III, Chairman of the Board of the Drum Major Institute (DMI), and Arndrea Waters King, President of DMI joined Héctor Sánchez Barba, President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota, issued the following statement following yesterday’s Supreme Court decision further eroding the Voting Rights Act:

“This decision is a profound setback for the promise of American democracy and a direct affront to the legacy of those who risked everything to secure the right to vote. The Voting Rights Act was never just a law; it was a moral commitment, born of struggle, sacrifice, and the belief that our democracy must include everyone. That commitment has now been severely weakened with Louisiana v. Callais.

“By limiting the tools available to challenge discriminatory voting practices, the Court has opened the door to more disenfranchisement that will disproportionately harm Black and Latino communities and dilute their political power. This is not an abstract concern; it is a real and immediate threat to fair representation and political power.

“We must work together in the face of increased efforts to silence the voices of communities of color.

“We must stand together, grounded in the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement, and committed to its unfinished work.

“We call on Congress to act with urgency to restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act. We call on communities across the country to organize, mobilize, and make their voices heard.

“The struggle for voting rights did not end in 1965, and it did not end yesterday. We will continue forward–together–until our democracy fully reflects the people it is meant to serve.”
