WASHINGTON, DC – Héctor Sánchez Barba, President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota, issued a statement after Senate Republicans passed a partisan budget resolution that hands over billions to ICE and Border Patrol without any guardrails while blocking attempts to lower costs for American families:

“Choosing to vote in the middle of the night will not save the U.S. Senate from the scrutiny this shameful budget bill deserves. The majority party rejected every proposal to address the affordability crisis, as the bill does nothing to lower the cost of health care, the price of groceries, or gasoline. Instead, the Senate majority followed Trump’s orders to prioritize multi-year funding for ICE and CBP over the American people, and give funding without any guardrails at a time when deaths in immigration detention are at record highs. Under Trump’s leadership, Americans and immigrants have been terrorized, abused, and even killed by ICE and CBP agents, and this budget bill allows them to continue to do that while indiscriminately targeting the Latino community. One silver lining was that we were able to stop the SAVE America Act from being slipped into this budget bill to get around a filibuster.

“We thank the senators who showed the backbone to insist on real reform. Mi Familia Vota will continue to encourage the public to call their representatives to demand accountability and transparency from the federal government, and to reject this bill. Our families vote, and they will remember at the ballot box who needs to be held accountable.”
