WASHINGTON, DC – Hector Sanchez Barba, President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota, issued the following statement in response to the deadly shooting of a U.S. citizen by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) today in Minneapolis:

“Today’s horrifying and deadly incident in Minneapolis is a direct result of the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant agenda targeting and harassing the Latino and immigrant communities. The culture of cruelty and fear that has been spread by Trump’s ICE puts families and individuals of all backgrounds across America in unnecessary danger. These reckless and violent policies are not about safety; they are about creating chaos, disruption, and only continue to divide federal law enforcement from the very communities they are meant to serve and protect. We are also deeply troubled that, in this event, as in other recent incidents, public video evidence appears to conflict with the official statements issued by ICE and DHS.

“Our hearts go out to the victim and her family. Mi Familia Vota will continue to demand accountability from ICE and DHS for putting communities in danger, and we call on elected officials in Congress to exercise their oversight responsibilities and investigate the facts around all of these discrepancies.”
