WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following the Supreme Court’s decision to undermine Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act in a 6-3 ruling on Louisiana v. Callais today, Héctor Sánchez Barba, President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota, released the following statement:
"This troubling ruling from the right-wing Supreme Court is but the most recent attack in a campaign by conservatives to erode the essential right to vote for all Americans. It reverses decades of hard-earned advancement dedicated to ensuring that every citizen, regardless of race, possesses an equal voice in our democracy and fair representation in the halls of power.
“Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act served as a vital shield, preventing states from the unlawful practice of fracturing racial and language minority groups across electoral districts to weaken their collective voting strength.
“Its elimination will have a devastating effect on the voting rights of Latinos, further distancing our democracy from being truly representative. While this case was brought by forces aiming to disenfranchise millions, such tactics will fail.
“This moment is a call to our community to redouble our efforts in pursuit of a greater democracy and representation of our vote at the ballot box. In the face of the Supreme Court's strike against the voting rights of Black and Latino citizens, we will make our voices heard in November.”
