WASHINGTON, DC – Hector Sanchez Barba, President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota, issued the following statement as the Supreme Court begins hearing oral arguments in Trump v. Barbara:

“Trump’s executive order on birthright citizenship clearly goes against the protections enshrined in the 14th Amendment that ensure U.S.-born children and families are treated equally across all local and state jurisdictions.

“For more than 150 years, the 14th Amendment has ensured that all persons born in the United States have the right to fully participate in our democracy. No president can single-handedly undo a century and a half of progress and bring us back to a time when we had different tiers of American-born people with different rights and liberties.

“The President does not have unfettered powers, and his testing of the limits of the law has already done grave damage to our democratic institutions. The Supreme Court must send a strong message that we are still a government of, by, and for the people, and that our institutions matter.”

“We at Mi Familia Vota will keep mobilizing to protect our democracy by ensuring that immigrants know their rights, including the power of the right to vote for the millions of citizens among us.”
