WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mi Familia Vota today issued a statement expressing concern over the ICE-involved shooting that resulted in a death today in Houston, Texas:
Hector Sanchez Barba, President and CEO, Mi Familia Vota:
“Mi Familia Vota condemns all acts of violence. If anyone assaulted or threatened federal officers today, we condemn it unequivocally. At the same time, accountability requires transparency. We call on DHS and ICE to immediately release all available body camera footage and provide a complete, factual account of what occurred. At a time when this administration continues to employ inflammatory anti-immigrant rhetoric and divisive messaging, transparency is not optional; it is necessary to ensure the public has confidence in the government's actions.”
Dayana Iza, Texas State Director, Mi Familia Vota:
“Too often, the initial accounts released by ICE and DHS after critical incidents have later been contradicted by video evidence or other facts, including in cases involving U.S. citizens. That history makes immediate transparency essential to maintaining public trust.
“For months, immigrant communities across the country have endured aggressive enforcement operations that have left families living in fear, separated loved ones, disrupted workplaces and neighborhoods, and created a climate of intimidation. Many in our communities feel terrorized by the constant threat of raids and increasingly violent enforcement actions.
“At least 52 people have died while in ICE custody since Trump’s second term. This is why transparency and accountability for federal agencies and federal law enforcement are more important than ever.”
