WASHINGTON, DC – The House of Representatives voted on a bill today to fund DHS through the rest of the fiscal year as part of a series of votes to avert a government shutdown at the end of January. President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota, Hector Sanchez Barba, issued the following statement:
“Mi Familia Vota is extremely disappointed in today’s vote in the House of Representatives that would continue to fund the Department of Homeland Security at historically high levels without addressing the real concerns raised by the American public who have been terrorized, abused and even killed by ICE and other DHS officials. Congress has a duty to provide oversight, and must put the brakes on Noem's DHS and its abuses of basic constitutional rights before even more people are harassed, gassed, beaten or killed.
“We thank the Members of Congress who showed the backbone to vote no and to insist on real reform over band aids that leave substantial problems in place. At Mi Familia Vota, we will continue to educate voters on the issues and demand accountability and transparency from the federal government. Our families vote, and they will remember at the ballot box who needs to be held accountable.”
