Mi Familia Vota to Trump Administration: Do Not Endanger Children to Attack Parents

Parents should not be penalized for providing for their children.

Washington D.C. – Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has submitted a proposal to penalize immigrant parents who claim basic benefits such as welfare, public benefits, or tax deductions, for their children -including U.S. born offspring. The ploy is an attempt to reduce and subjugate foreign-born populations living in the United States, including legal residents.

Ben Monterroso, Executive Director of Mi Familia Vota, issued the following statement:

“It is grossly Un-American to attack immigrant families, and to attempt to ravage their children’s future is reprehensible. These are not the principles upon which our country stands. Trump’s racial slurs and epitaphs have long gone unrestrained by the Republican Party and we are seeing its destructive growth being applied in policy by departments that are enacting Trump’s plans. American children born to immigrant families are not third-rate citizens. The Trump administration is creating the foundation for a type of lower class citizenship and the Republic Party is enabling him. Their silence is immoral.

“Make no mistake, this is a racially-charged attempt to cripple and corner immigrant parents – including those with legal status- by denying them the prospect of becoming citizens for providing for their children. The thought alone of withholding assistance to children is damaging to us all, but the brunt of this malicious policy will be experienced by children born into poverty. Every resource counts, even the milk that they need to be healthy and strengthen them as they grow up to contribute to our country. There are two options here under this proposal: put yourself at risk of family separation, or endanger your children by denying them the basic benefits they need to thrive. These options are unacceptable and its unfathomable that the Trump administration could conjure such a plan.

“We are shaken that the Trump administration would cross all ethical boundaries in an attempt to reduce even legal immigration, at the cost of our country’s basic morals. The Republic Party cannot continue to embrace this racist ideology.”
