Mi Familia Vota: President Trump has Learned Yet Again that He Cannot Break the Law
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The following is a statement from Ben Monterroso, executive director of Mi Familia Vota, on U.S. District Court Judge Derrick K. Watson issuing a temporary restraining order on President Donald Trump’s second attempt at an executive order targeting Muslim people and refugees:
“President Donald Trump has learned yet again that he cannot break the law. His second attempt to subvert the will of the courts and American people in order to fulfill his campaign promise and ban Muslim people has been thwarted by a Judge Watson in Hawaii, just hours before the executive order was to be implemented.
“In his decision, Judge Watson made it clear that despite the White House’s framing that this was a new order, the intent and impact was the same. Singling out a group of people based on their nationality is unconstitutional and immoral, and no matter how the White House and President Trump tries to spin this, the executive order’s impact on Muslim people, in the U.S. and abroad, is undeniable.
“After President Trump signed this latest executive order targeting Muslim people and refugees, concerned people across the country began to mobilize to defend the promise inscribed on Lady Liberty – as a country, we live up to our values when we provide a safe haven to those in need. While today we celebrate a victory in the courts, we must continue to push the Republican Party to defend the U.S. Constitution and to serve as a check to President Trump’s reckless, unlawful, and un-American agenda.”
