WASHINGTON, DC – Mi Familia Vota President and CEO Hector Sanchez Barba today called for Congress to repeal the theft of health care coverage passed in the so-called Big Beautiful Bill, and condemned the White House’s deceptive scapegoating of immigrants to force a government shut down:
Hector Sanchez-Barba, President and CEO of Mi Familia Vota, issued the following statement:
“There is a single party in control of the White House, U.S. Senate, and House of Representatives, the same one that put health care for millions of Americans on the chopping block to pay for tax cuts for billionaires in a big ugly bill. To scapegoat immigrants by lying and saying the looming government shutdown has anything to do with health care for undocumented migrants is offensive and a dangerous perpetuation of an image of immigrants as a drain on society. The opposite is true. Undocumented immigrants do not get federal health care benefits, and like waves of immigrants before them, have paid taxes and contributed to building this country. We would hope the government would remain open, but we stand with anyone fighting to rescue health care for American citizens, and to extend the Affordable Care Act’s Enhanced Premium Tax Credits that have saved so many lives by putting health care coverage within financial reach. Since Donald Trump took office, unemployment is up, inflation is up, and groceries are more expensive for hard-working Latinos. Mi Familia Vota is taking action to educate our families and our voters about this shutdown, how it affects them, and how to hold those responsible accountable with our votes.”
